In addition to using drugs from doctors, not a few people with diabetes (hereinafter referred to as diabetes) who also seek treatment naturally. One that is often used is leaf insulin. Leaves that have a Latin name Costus igneus are believed to reduce blood sugar in diabetics. Is that true?
How does leaf insulin reduce blood sugar?

This statement is reinforced by a study from Kasturba Medical College that specifically examined the benefits of insulin leaves on diabetes blood sugar levels in India. This study also compared the effectiveness of insulin leaves with the efficacy of the Glibenclamide diabetes drug.
Researchers looked at these benefits after collecting and drying insulin leaves cultivated in Mangalore, Karnataka, India, during September and October. After drying, these leaves are finely ground until they become powdered powder, graded into small doses, and then dissolved in water.
The solution will then be given to male rats. In the first few days of the study, these mice had already been given the Glibenclamide drug . A few days later the lab mice were given drinking water with a solution of leaf insulin.
During this study, lab rats were also required to fast so that their blood sugar levels decreased. The result was a decrease in 2-hour postprandial blood sugar levels (GD2PP aka blood sugar after meals) after drinking insulin water appeared to be equivalent to a decrease in GD2PP with Glibenclamide treatment.
Another study, still from India, published by the International Journal of Ayurveda Research also found something similar. Researchers reported that insulin leaves were able to reduce fasting blood sugar (GDP) and GD2PP levels to normal levels in lab rats that experienced hyperglycemia after being induced with dexamethasone.
Even so, it is unclear as to what or how this leaf mechanism can reduce blood sugar.
Other benefits of leaf insulin for health
The benefits of leaf insulin for diabetes have so far not been fully proven by medical research. But a number of studies reporting on this leaf also appear to have the potential to:
1. Reducing high blood pressure
According to a study from India , the effect of reducing blood pressure from leaves of Costus igneus comes from its diuretic effect which works similar to furosemide drugs . Furosemide is a diuretic drug, one of which is used to treat high blood pressure.
This study compared the effects of insulin leaves at a dose of 100 and 200 mg per kilogram of body weight with furosemide per 4 mg / kg. The results showed that costus igneus had the effect of decreasing potassium and sodium levels as much as the effect of furosemide drugs .
What needs to be understood, too much deposition of sodium and potassium in the blood is indeed associated with an increase in blood pressure over time.
2. Contains antioxidants
Insulin leaves are reported to contain two antioxidant compounds named quercetin and diosgenin which are useful for fighting the effects of free radicals on the liver, pancreas and kidneys of mice with diabetes.
Another study found that leaf antioxidant activity was very high, at around 89.5% and 90%.
3. Antimicrobial properties
Methanol extract from leaf content Costus igneus shows antibacterial activity that works against the development of Bacillus megaterium , Micrococcus leuteus , Staphylococcusn aureus , Streptococcus lactis , Salmonella and negative Pseudomonomon aeruginosa bacteria .
Ethanol extract of leaves of Costus igneus was also found to show antibacterial and antifungal activity against E. coli and Candida albicans .

Remember : just like herbs and other herbal medicines, you should consult your doctor first if you want to try using leaves of insulin to manage diabetes.
Not all drugs or herbs will produce a uniform effect on everyone. Herbs and herbal medicines also do not have the right standard dosage. Incorrect dosage or method of use might actually risk worsening your diabetes.
The routine of seeing a doctor is the only way that is proven safe for controlling diabetes. Here are other ways that are also effective at helping to lower blood sugar:
